I just sent the message below to USHPA via info@ushap.aero. If you like the idea and wish to support it, below the message is a copy/paste note you can send them saying so.

For those reading this outside of the US, possibly this can be (or maybe already is) done by your country. The next step would be host the list at a world-level official PG/HG like CIVIL/FAI - http://www.fai.org/hang-gliding-and-paragliding but I’ll let someone else run with that idea.

How about a USHPA “Stolen Equipment” classified section?

This comes from noticing numerous “Hey my gear got stolen!!” posts recently on various forums. Though stolen gear postings are available in the USHPA magazine – for the notices in the magazine the issue is that they do not archive and they are not readily available. Currently the http://www.USHPA.areo site lists only items for sale http://www.ushpa.aero/classified_index.asp and the http://www.USHPA.org site lists only schools/dealers http://www.ushpa.org/classified/

USHPA site can be the go-to USA location for theft victims to list their stolen stuff and buyers to check if the gear they are considering is listed as stolen. If known about widely, such a listing service can reunite a pilot with their stolen gear and also possibly curb the stolen gear market if buyers and those that see gear for sale check the equipment being offered against the stolen postings.

USHPA has the unique position of being able to offer this listing service for both PG and HG and do it on a national level. That national status has tremendous value for complied listings of this type over the various individual third-party sites (PG Forum, OzReport, local club websites). Because the third-party sites each require their own log-ins and require the poster and the reader/checker to visit each of the sites individually many are missed because people may not be aware of the third-party sites, or the time to create accounts is burdensome, or with the local club website, a listing of stolen gear misses its audience when the gear is moved to a different location.

With the listings archived, even gear stolen a while ago that may have changed hands multiple times can be checked at any time.

The greatest benefit would be to have any USHPA member be able to post and have any public reader be able to see the listings. Having each club website and third-party forum have a link to the USHPA stolen area listings would really help compile all such listings and have them in one place. To have each third-party site and each local club site post something like the following at the top of their classifieds would direct folks to the right place “Check if the items listed have been reported stolen by clicking here – link to USHPA stolen listings”

If you think this idea is worth considering, please let me know and I would be happy to add some details on how the posts themselves may be structured for efficient listing/reading.

I like the idea of the national stolen equipment listing I read about here – viewtopic.php?p=2134#p2134
